     As I have shared previously in the kick-off edition of SFY, my “aha” moment took place when I turned 50 years of age. As a result of my own health scare, I have made it my personal intention to ask questions from experts who want to find the cause rather than treat the symptoms!

     The conversations that I have had with experts have been eye opening to say the least.  The most important lesson that I’ve learned is that our healthcare system is oriented toward the notion that we have to reach a diagnosis very quickly, and with that diagnosis often come medical interventions. However, functional medical professional(s) understand through biochemistry that hormones produced by the adrenal, thyroid and others are greatly affected by many internal and different things, and it’s not the diagnosis that’s important—it’s actually the lifestyle that makes a difference.

     Additionally, doctors shared that often they see women who have hormonal problems from some kind of disruption, and it’s actually coming from the stressors they have in their lives.

    One thing is for sure- doctors are starting to understand that too much stress for too long adversely affects our bodies; it affects our hormones as well as our thyroid, adrenal, and internal systems. The take- away is that, these are the key pieces we need to look at in women, understanding that a doctor can’t diagnose someone with hormonal difficulties without looking at what their adrenal and thyroid systems are doing and how much stress they’ve had, either physical or emotional, in their lifetime. It’s all connected!

Dr. Crum is a professor, psychologist, and researcher investigating how mindsets affect health and behavior.

Dr. Crum's research focuses on how changes in subjective mindsets—the lenses through which information is perceived, organized, and interpreted—can alter objective reality through behavioral, psychological, and physiological mechanisms. Her work is, in part, inspired by research on the placebo effect, a notable and consistent demonstration of the ability of the mindset to elicit healing properties in the body. She is interested in understanding how mindsets affect important outcomes outside the realm of medicine, in the domains of behavioral health and organizational behavior
